Day 9 (Saturday, July 3) Houston & Austin, TX

Today, we drove from Houston to our campground just northwest of San Antonio. We relaxed at the pool for a little while and then jumped in the truck and headed to Austin for some dinner and a pontoon boat ride on Lady Bird Lake. The boat took us under the Congress Avenue bridge. The underside of the bridge has lots of expansion cracks in the concrete which are currently inhabited by 1.5 million Mexican Freetail bats. The bats are coming out later in the evening this year because the spring was so moist and the insects are plentiful. The bats don't have to travel as far to get food so they can come out later but were still visible against the lights of the city and skyline as they swarmed out from under the bridge like a long stream of smoke. The boat captain even had an electronic device that allowed us to hear the bats' ultrasonic sounds. They're very vocal creatures! The boys were fascinated and listened intently to the captain's descriptions of bat life. They both want to see more bats, which we hope to see at Carlsbad Caverns.

Tomorrow is July 4th and we are going into San Antonio to see the Alamo, Riverwalk and whatever fireworks the city has to offer.
